It has been a very busy year in MBUSD, with academic achievement continuing at high levels and innovation emerging in all MBUSD schools. Congratulations to all of the educators, staff, parents and community members who do so much to make MBUSD one of the finest school districts in the nation. Congratulations on a wonderful 2012, and we look forward to an even better 2013! MBUSD wishes all of you a Happy New Year!
January 23 MBUSD begins Safe School Ambassadors Program at all elementary schools and the middle school. Designed to harness the power of students to prevent and stop bullying and violence.
February 7 Manhattan Beach Middle School students win regional MathCounts competition.
March 1 Choir members and Vocal Ensemble travel to New York City to participate in the Carnegie Hall National Choir Festival. They were amazing!
April 9 MBUSD Facebook Page starts. Now with over 300 “Likes.” Joins MBUSD Twitter account (750 Followers) in an effort to share more information and stories across our district and the broader Manhattan Beach community.
April 19 Mira Costa Model United Nations Team ends year ranked #2 in the nation.
May 16 Mira Costa mathematics teacher Linda Gesualdi selected as MBUSD Teacher of the Year.
May 19 Mira Costa Boys Volleyball Wins CIF Championship – Ranked #1 in California and #2 in the Nation!
June 3 Grand View Elementary receives the inaugural National Green Ribbon School Award in Washington, D.C. It is an honor for all of our efforts to be green!
June 6 MBMS Office Manager Kamrin Campbell selected as MBUSD Classified Employee of the Year
July 16 Construction of the steel superstructure of the new math/science building at Mira Costa begins. All construction is still on time and on budget.
June 19 MBUSD Board of Trustees approves 1:1 iPad Program at the middle school. It is one of the first such programs in the nation.
June 19 MBEF donates record $5 million to the District for 2012/2013 grants
June 21 Class of 2012 graduates from Mira Costa High School. They are off to universities around the country!
July 9 60 MBUSD K-8 Teachers trained in Writing Workshop by mentors from Columbia University in preparation for the launch of a new writing program in MBUSD.
September 7 MBUSD and Teachers union settle negotiation, agreeing on a 3% raise for all employees (one of only a few districts in the state with any kind of raise) and maintaining health benefits.
September 21 Linda Gesualdi honored as one of 16 Los Angeles County Teacher of the Year
September 28 MCHS Distinguished Alumni Hall of Fame begins with 16 inductees into the Hall.
October 6 MBUSD and teachers union reach agreement on new teacher evaluation system based on the National Board for Professional Teaching Standards. New system will be used with all temporary and probationary teachers and any tenured teachers who volunteer.
October 10 MBUSD Student Testing Data released. API grows to 937 – the 4th highest unified school district in the state.
October 13 The second Manhattan Beach TEDx Event, “Journey to Purpose: Dream. Educate. Thrive,” inspires many at Manhattan Beach Middle School
November 15 MBUSD hosts 1st-ever District Technology Night at Pacific Elementary School. Over 300 parents attend event where teachers from around the district demonstrate how technology is being used in MUBSD classrooms.
December 16 Ida VanderPoorte elected president of the MBUSD Board of Trustees.
