On the March 6th MBUSD Board agenda and the March 6th Manhattan Beach City Council agenda was a proposed new agreement between the City and MBUSD. Currently, MBUSD provides the city with the use of its school fields, Polliwog Park, Begg Pool and the Mira Costa High School tennis courts. The city does provide $70,000 to MBUSD for field maintenance costs as a part of the current agreement, and the city budgets an additional $200,000 in costs to maintain the fields.
Members of City Council and members of the MBUSD Board of Trustees have been meeting for months working on revising the agreement. The new draft agreement (see attachment) expands the facilities for use by the City to include all hardscape courts, the Mira Costa swimming pool, and occasional use of other facilities. In return, the City will pay an additional annual amount of $500,000. This amount reflects what both parties agree to be a fair market value not only for the facilities, but for the upkeep of the facilities as well.
Also in the agreement, the City and the District agreed to examine the long term lease of the property on Peck Avenue where the MBUSD Maintenance and Operations facility currently exists. This could be a very useful property for the City, and those discussions are continuing.
The MBUSD Board of Trustees and the Manhattan Beach City Council are holding a joint meeting at the Joslyn Center on Monday, April 22nd at 6:00 PM to further discuss this draft agreement.
