E-Bike Safety Program

MBUSD to Launch New E-Bike Safety Initiative
In an effort to increase awareness and safety on the roads and on our campuses, MBUSD has launched an E-Bike Safety program. Students who ride an e-bike to school will need to provide proof of certification through an approved e-bike safety course. The District’s approved safety classes are offered only through Pedal Ace and E-Bike Sense. Upon successful completion of one of these courses, students will be issued an MBUSD registered sticker that will allow them to park their e-bike on campus. Students may enroll in District-sponsored E-Bike Sense courses on a space available basis or they may enroll privately with either PedalAce or E-Bike Sense. Students MUST bring their street legal e-bike to participate in classes by E-Bike Sense. If your student has taken a class through Pedal Ace or E-Bike Sense privately, they may submit a copy of their certification to their school office, and, once verified, a sticker will be issued. Please see the FAQ below for more information and for discount codes for MBUSD students.
For the E-Bike Sense Private course, please use the discount code MBUSD25 to receive a 25% discount available to MBUSD families.

We are excited to introduce a new districtwide e-bike safety initiative for the 2024-25 school year, aimed at enhancing the safety of our students who ride e-bikes to school. Beginning on November 4 for MBMS and MCHS students, and beginning on December 9 for elementary students, all students who wish to park their e-bikes on campus must complete an e-bike safety course and registration process. With the rise of e-bike use across Manhattan Beach, the new initiative will educate riders on how to stay safe and keep others safe when they are operating an e-bike. Please note that e-bikes are only permitted for students in grades 4 and up on MBUSD campuses.

Beginning on November 4 if your child is a MBMS and/or MCHS student who rides a e-bike to school, and beginning on December 9 if your child is an elementary student who rides an e-bike to school, an MBUSD-registered sticker must be affixed to the e-bike in order for your student to be allowed to park on campus. Students are required to complete an approved safety class in order to be eligible to receive a sticker. The District’s approved safety classes are offered only through Pedal Ace and E-Bike Sense. Students who successfully complete one of these courses, either through District-sponsored classes offered free of charge through E-Bike Sense or through private enrollment in either program, will be issued stickers through the school office during the month of October. Please note that each sticker will be numbered and registered to the individual student who earns it.

If your student has already completed or will complete a private class through Pedal Ace and E-Bike Sense, please have your student bring their certificate of completion to the front office in order to be issued a sticker. Certificates will be cross-referenced with lists provided to the school by Pedal Ace and E-Bike Sense.

Please use this 6th - 12th grade link or this elementary link if you would like to sign up for an upcoming District-sponsored in-person class through E-Bike Sense, available at no cost on a space-available basis. Students must bring their street legal e-bike with pedals and a helmet to these classes. Here is the link to register privately for the in-person E-Bike Sense course. Please use the discount code MBUSD25 to receive a 25% discount available to MBUSD families. You can also sign up for the Pedal Ace course, which is 50% off here

To provide our students time to complete these certification classes, enforcement of this policy will begin on November 4, 2024, for students at MBMS and MCHS and on December 9 for 4th and 5th grade students. If a student attempts to bring an e-bike onto campus after November 4 at MBMS or MCHS and after December 9 at our elementary campuses, and they have not completed the required training and received a registration sticker, the e-bike will be held for parent pick up. Students riding non-electric bikes will not be required to attend a certification course or to display a sticker on their bike.

In order to get a head start on e-bike safety, you can also have your student take this free safety and training course designed and offered by the California Highway Patrol. It is a good way to help orient our e-bike riders to the rules of the road and ride more safely. This course will not fulfill the requirements for a sticker but will help your student be safer on the road.

We will continue to share important updates about this initiative. We appreciate your continued support of student safety. Working together, we can ensure a safer environment and promote responsible e-bike usage.
