2-4-14:      Bond Oversight Committee tour of Phase 3 construction.  3:30 PM.  Meet at construction trailer at MCHS.

1-6-14: Students and teachers return from winter break and move into the fully remodeled finger buildings at MCHS.  MBUSD staff and work crews were busy all during the break, putting finishing touches on the classrooms, moving furniture and materials and hooking-up equipment.

11-09-13:   Check out the great time lapse video on YouTube, of the Math/Science building being constructed. Running time is a little over 5 minutes.

8-2-13:     Walk-through of the lower level (basement) to create master punch list will take place at 9:00 AM.

7-29-13:   The new staff and visitor parking lot is being put down today, in front of the math/science building.

7-15-13 As we move rapidly toward the start of school on August 28, 2013, work on the math/science building is reaching a feverish pitch.  Workers are now on-site six (6) days a week (Monday through Saturday), completing all of the many tasks that remain before keys to the new building are turned-over to the district.  Meanwhile, an entirely different group of workers is busy with Phase 2 of the project; modernization of all classrooms in the MCHS "finger buildings".

7-1-13     If you happened to drive by the new math/science building over the past weekend and noticed that the lights were all on, this was intentional and not due to someone forgetting to flip the switch "off" on Friday afternoon.  Our new lights and fixtures all must be "burned-in" for a period of time in order to obtain maximum output and efficiency from these devices.  As a result, it is normal (and necessary) to leave all of the lights on for that initial period of time.

6-25-13: This is an important day for our BB project, as today the Edison Company energized (e.g. flipped the switch) on our new math/science building!  We are very excited to finally be able to power-up and test all of the building's new systems.  Thank you Southern California Edison!!!

6-7-13:   The latest status report on the Measure BB Project was just posted.

6-1-13:   The new math/science building is quickly nearing completion.  Workers are now very busy installing everything from cabinets and countertops to corridor topping slabs and paint.  The project remains on time and on budget, with an expected opening in mid-August.  Meanwhile, preparations are underway for the movement of classroom materials and equipment from the finger buildings into temporary summer storage, where the items will remain until everything can be moved into the math/science building.

4-3-13:   The latest status report on the Measure BB Project was just released.

2-28-13 The latest status report on the Measure BB Project was just released.

1-2-13   Phase I of the construction project continues without much (if any) delays from the rain.  The latest status report from Bernards presents a succinct update of the project along with some amazing pictures of the progress being made.  In addition to the physical construction taking place at MCHS, the project team is also beginning the process of procuring new furniture for the math/science building.

12-5-12   The Board of Trustees toured the construction site today at 4:00 PM.

11-14-12   The Bond Oversight Committee (BOC) toured the construction site today at 4:00 PM.

10-30-12  A letter is being sent out today to inform neighbors near Peck Avenue, that a tree immediately adjacent to the new math/science building will need to be removed during the week of November 19, 2012.  If the tree is not removed, construction work will almost certainly kill it, causing the tree to become a safety hazard to people and property.  The letter includes information about the District's plans for replanting trees in this space.

10-23-12   This week, workers are doing major earthwork to backfill the perimeter trenches around the base of the building.  In just a few days, we hope to see the last of the large dirt pile that has been sitting for months on the construction site.  Meanwhile, work continues on interior framing, moving building materials and components onto the work site and preparation for the next major concrete pour in the lower (basement) level of the building.

10-12-12 CONCRETE POUR DELAYED TO FRIDAY DUE TO EXPECTED RAIN:  On Friday October 11, 2012, concrete for the roof of the new math/science building will be poured.  While we anticipate this work will be completed by the end of the day, the curing process for concrete is dependent upon a number of variables, including Mother Nature!  As a result, if the concrete sets-up slower than expected, finishing it could take crews additional time to complete.  We appreciate everyone's cooperation in the event this situation occurs, as it did last Thursday with another concrete pour.  NOTE:  This work was originally scheduled to be done on Thursday.  See the attached notice regarding the change in plans as a result of expected rainfall.

10-8-12 Welding and fireproofing continue on structural steel, while electrical, plumbing and mechanical systems are "roughed-in".  Metal stud framing of interior walls is also ongoing, helping the interior rooms of the new math/science building take shape.  Meanwhile, staff from MCHS continue to work with the construction team on planning classroom movement from the MCHS "finger buildings" during the summer of 2013.  Technology and furniture, fixtures and equipment (FF&E) are also major topics of discussion and planning.

10-4-12 Today concrete was poured on the northern section of the building and the curing process took longer than expected, so crews had to work later than usual to complete the finishing process. Ultimately the finishing was completed.

10-3-12 An update on the Measure BB construction project was presented to the Board of Trustees at their regular meeting.

9-10-12 The Bond Oversight Committee toured the construction site.

8-8-12 The Board of Trustees visited the construction site before their regular meeting and saw the new math/science building in its current state.  Steel is still being put into place and will continue for the next several weeks.

7-18-12 An update on the Measure BB construction project was presented to the Board of Trustees at their regular meeting.

7-6-12 In an effort to keep you up-to-date on important milestones regarding the Measure BB building project at Mira Costa High School, we want to make you aware of what will be happening on the work site over the next several weeks.

Today construction crews began assembling a 280 foot crane on the site of the former upper Peck parking lot at MCHS.  This crane will be used to set steel girders in place for constructing the frame of the new math/science building.  Steel should be arriving on-site beginning early next week and workers will be installing it through early to mid-September.  Construction will begin with the southern section of the building and move northward.

Large trucks delivering steel will be entering and exiting the site off Peck Avenue near Artesia, but should not cause significant traffic issues since school is not in session at this time.  During daylight working hours we anticipate some noise coming from the site as steel workers connect the building’s frame.

As we shared with you in the past, please remember you can always get updated information on the Measure BB building project by checking our web site at www.mbusd.org.  On our home page, look for the link to the “Mira Costa Construction Project.”  Follow the link and you will find current information about the project, including a “three-week look ahead” which graphically shows all of the work being done (weather permitting) over the coming weeks.  The project web page also provides a link to a real-time image of the work site, allowing you to view construction in progress.  Also, you can follow us on Twitter at www.twitter.com/mbusdnews

We will continue to do everything possible to minimize inconvenience and disruption to you and all of our neighbors.  Thank you in advance for your support, patience and understanding as we work toward completion of this project.  On behalf of our Board of Trustees and the entire MBUSD community, have a great summer.

3-21-12: Update to Board of Education on the Measure BB building project.

3-5-12: Cement mixers are coming!  Tomorrow (Tuesday March 6, 2012), a number a cement trucks will be rolling onto the work site to begin pouring the foundation of the new math/science building.  Trucks are expected between 9:00 AM and 3:00 PM, entering the site from Artesia.  Please excuse the noise tomorrow as we complete this important part of the Measure BB project.

2-9-12: Latest news from the work site is to expect a fair amount of cement truck activity during the morning next week.  The BB construction crew is ready to begin some major concrete work in preparation for building the foundation of our new math/science building.  Trucks will enter the neighborhood from Artesia, turning onto Peck for the short drive to and from the work site.  We expect some noise and probably some rumbling as these large and heavy vehicles enter and exit the site.

2-3-12: Our new WEB CAM is up and running!  The camera points directly at the location of the future math/science building and it is operational 24/7.  Movements may be a little jerky due to the need to preserve bandwidth, but you can clearly see what is happening and even though the site is closed at night, the camera's infrared abilities give you a clear view of the site while it sleeps.

1-31-12:   Currently the work site is relatively quiet, as crews dig trenches and install steel for the footings and foundation of the new math/science building.  Check the 3-week look ahead for details.
